Why I Love Direct Marketing for VO Work

Pitch, Connect, Repeat: Why I Love Direct Marketing for VO

Every voice over journey begins with the mic, but how you connect with clients makes all the difference.

Let’s talk about something I don’t think enough voice actors talk about…. the power of direct marketing!

It’s not always flashy. It’s not always easy. Honestly, sometimes it’s downright boring and feels like a grind. But if you ask me? It’s one of the most empowering parts of this business.

When I first started voice over, I did what tons of people do…. I auditioned like crazy, checked all the P2Ps, and waited for my agents to send something my way. But it wasn’t until I took my outreach into my own hands that my business really exploded. Here’s why:

You’re a human, not just a voice.

Sending a cold email or a LinkedIn message lets you introduce yourself like a real person. Not as VO #27 out of 346 auditions, but as you and everything that comes with that. Your vibe, tone, values, story, etc.

And because you’re reaching out intentionally, clients get to see what kind of collaborator you are from the jump. That connection and that ability to get along with someone is sometimes more important than who can do the job.

Way Less Noise. Way More Signal.

Auditioning through casting sites, while effective for many people myself included, often means competing with hundreds, sometimes thousands, of other voices. But when you market directly, you’re not trying to shout over a crowd. You’re simply having a conversation.

I’ve found that direct outreach gives me more quality one-on-one time with potential clients. I get to pitch myself, I get to provide my rates, I get to show them why I am the best solution to their problem, and most of all, I get to show them that I am incredibly easy to work with, that I won’t cause them more problems.

The Follow Up Game is Everything

One of the best parts of direct marketing? The relationship doesn’t end after one email.

Because of my time as a customer service analyst (and my love for spreadsheets), I’ve built systems to track who I reach out to, when to follow up, when to invoice, and how to check in without being pushy. I get permission from these conversations to follow up, and then I do so to stay top of mind. It keeps things organized and personal.

Clients remember that. They remember when someone follows through, checks in, and makes their job easier. That’s how we build trust. We all want to work with people who are diligent and responsive.

You’re in the Driver’s Seat

Direct marketing puts you in control. You choose who to contact. You decide how to present yourself. You get to say, “I’d really love to work with this brand,” and then actually do something about it. Even if they don’t keep a roster of VO talent and only go through other channels, then at least you know where to best focus your efforts.

There’s something incredibly satisfying about that. The possibilities are literally endless!

Key Takeaways

  • Direct marketing creates genuine connections with less competition
  • It gives you more ownership over your outreach and career path
  • Systems (like follow-up tracking) help you build trust and consistency

If you’re looking to work with someone who brings both creativity and professionalism to the table, and truly values the human side of this industry, I’d love to connect.
